Brandon Vink, a young driver from Humboldt, Ks., turned in an outstanding effort Friday night in Humboldt Speedway’s Sport Compact division for his first feature win of the 2020 season.

Sport Compact is the basic, entry level class of Dirt Racing at The Hummer; a rough and tumble, run what you brung collection of 4 cylinder front wheel drive cars that, oddly enough, are most often are mechanically very similar. Thus, driving skill plays a big part in a driver finding his or her way to Victory Lane.

Brandon Vink secured the lead early, and turned in a smooth effort for a wire to wire feature win. Scott Vink of Ottawa, Ks. fought through the 14 car field to finish second, while Clint Haigler of Humboldt secured third. Cody Vink, Humboldt, finished fourth, with lady driver Moriah Haigle also from Humboldt, secured the top five.

Jon “Dovey” Westhoff once again was the winner of the 16 car Home Savings Bank Factory Stock “A” feature this week. Westhoff captured the lead early, then the Humboldt driver fought off a determined late race charge from runner up Ethan Vance of Chanute, who relegated Humboldt driver Scott Collins to third. Rick Aiello finished fourth, while Humboldt’s Trey Stipp overcame several adverse situations to nail down the fifth spot.

Ray’s metal Depot B-Mod action saw Lansing, Ks pilot Jake Richards lead the 13 car field from start to finish on his way to Victory Circle. Clint Johnson of Neosho, Mo. powered his way from the fifth row inside to ring up a runner up finish. Kenton Allen, Chanute, turned in a well-executed effort to claim the third slot. Pittsburg B-Mod ace Brian McGowen tallied a hard fought fourth place spot, while Dan Daniels of Humboldt took home fifth.

Returning from the bye week, Street Stocks once again were in The Hummer field. Hailing from Stoutland, Mo., Deerek Brown made a blistering fast Humbolt Speedway debut as he aced the rest of the 8 car field for the win. Dalton Garrison of Collinsville, Ok. was a strong second, third spot fell to Scott Stuart of Chanute. Devin Irvin of Cleveland, Mo. was fourth, with Chanute veteran Dennis Bishop fifth.

While Midwest Modifieds enjoyed their bye week, the large, enthusiastic Hummer crowd was treated to a visit from the OCRS (Oil Capital Racing Series) Winged Outlaw Sprint Cars, an annual Hummer event of breathtaking raw speed and skill. Known for their wide open style and close combat racing, the 16 car Sprint Car feature spanning 30 laps did not disappoint. #88, Terry Easum topped the main event, while Zach Chappell, the 50Z, made a masterful charge into the runner up spot. #5, Joe Bob Lee, came home third, followed by fourth place Jared Sewell in the #44 car, with #14, Stephanie Chappell rounded out the Fab Five.

Next Friday’s Hummer High Banks action features a full night of racing from all 5 regular classes. Gates open at 6:00pm, hot laps at 7:15, and action at 8;00, with a full slate of local action hero’s and heroines bringing the excitement!
